What is a Gray Divorce?

Divorce can happen to couples at any age, whether they are young or old, and no matter how long they have been together. There is a growing trend in divorce in which older couples split even when they have been married for a long time.

If a couple divorces and they are over 50 years old, it is commonly known as a “gray divorce.” Gray divorces bring their own unique challenges, and learning about those potential obstacles before you are in the middle of divorce proceedings will help you in your own case and in life afterward.

Divorce Statistics

A study by the Pew Research Center on divorce found the divorce rate has almost doubled among United States adults age 50 or over since the 1990s. That rate is still about half of that for people under 50, but the increase is significant nonetheless.

The jump in divorces for people 50 and older is related to the life experiences of the Baby Boomer generation. When Boomers were young adults, divorces levels were very high, and many of them remarried after splitting with their first spouse. Second and third marriages tend to be less stable than initial marriages. The divorce rate in remarriages for adults 50 or older is double that of people married only once.

Divorce Risks

Divorce is complicated no matter the age, but gray divorce also carries its own issues. Even though a couple’s children are typically adults by that time, financial stability is sometimes reduced after a gray divorce due to the accumulation of debts over time and potential spousal maintenance obligations. It can also have an adverse effect on the life satisfaction and standard of living of those who live alone after the divorce, especially if they have not done so in decades.
