Study Suggests Divorce Increases Likelihood of Heart Attack In Women

While it is well-known divorce can affect your mental and emotional well-being, one aspect of divorce often ignored is the potential effect it can have on your body. Maintaining good health in all aspects of your life is important for your overall happiness and ability to move on after divorce. Visiting your doctor for a checkup and making your physical health a priority can serve as a benefit as you go through the strenuous divorce process.

A study by Duke University examined the effects of divorce on the heart health of women, and the results point to an increased risk of heart attack for divorced females.

Divorce Study Results

This study gathered data over an 18-year period and examined a group of 15,000 people who were married at least once. At the start of the study, 14 percent of the men and 19 percent of the women were divorced. When the study concluded, those numbers increased to more than one-third of the people in the study being divorced at least one time. During the length of the study, more than 1,200 people had a heart attack. Those numbers were compared with women who stayed in the marriage, and it was found that there was a 24 percent greater chance the women who were divorced once would have a heart attack. The likelihood increased even more for the women divorced twice. The likelihood they would have a heart attack was 77 percent greater than the women in the study who stayed married.

The results for women were not the same as the men in the study. The men did not have a greater risk of a heart attack unless they divorced at least two times, and then they were only 30 percent more likely than the married men to have a heart attack.

Talk to Your Doctor

The results of this study are not a guarantee that if you divorce you will have a heart attack. The results do indicate divorce places a significant amount of stress on the body. If you intend to begin the divorce process, make your health a priority. Meet with your doctor to develop a fitness and relaxation plan to mitigate the possible physical impact.
